Ecosystem Services/Nature-Based Solutions

We are well-versed in assessing the benefits of pollution-reducing policies on ecosystem services (i.e., contributions of ecosystems to human well-being). Some examples of our experience developing tools, models, and frameworks to support such assessments are described below.

Evaluating environmental policies typically involves identifying, quantifying, and valuing changes in ecosystems and their contributions to human welfare (as feasible). We have developed/applied classification frameworks to help identify and classify pathways through which ecological systems contribute to human welfare. Such systems can also be used for environmental accounting or green Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Policy Analysis

Assessing the benefits of pollution-reducing policies entails quantifying and valuing changes in ecosystem services. Our methods link ecological models with market and nonmarket economic valuation methods. Examples projects include regulatory impact analysis (RIA) for evaluating secondary ambient standards for nitrogen and sulfur oxides in the United States.

For example, flooding may release contaminants from such sites and impair drinking water and food.
